Andalusian Nationals
October 2003

Fort Worth, Texas - October... Weather held, but even if it hadn't, the indoor climate controlled environment of the showgrounds was appreciated! We were fortunate enough to be stabled with our friends at JDon Farms in the main building. Our horses [Montero V and Fandango D] certainly appreciated the fans and double stalls they were afforded, not to mention the hot and cold water available in the wash racks! Our friends, accomodations, show staff, volunteers and the show organization made what can be a grueling show, pleasant.Dressage: Montero V, owned by Riitta and Jonathan Saada [Casa Buena Suerte] were only competing in dressage at his event and were quite successful! Montero brought home "National Champion" at Third Level Dressage and "Reserve National Champion, Fourth Level. Fandango D was just out of the ribbons in his Training and First level classes. Although he put on solid performances and we were delighted with his effort, it wasn't his day. However, he more than made up for Wednesday in following days...Ring Classes: Fandango D, owned by Shelly Fries [Vista del Lago] competed in Dressage Suitability and Hunt Seat during rigorous night classes that were so large they were split! That meant the horses went in and were put through all their paces, then if selected top five in their split class they had to come back later and compete again. Classes ranged from 15-18 horses, and in each class Fandango D took Reserve Champion! The judges were so impressed with the top two horses in each class that they made a point of identifying the riders and telling them personally what a great ride they each had. To top the show off, Jutta rode Santana [a JDon entry] in Show Hack late Saturday night for a top five placement in a field of 12. If you have never seen a show hack class - imagine this... An oval arena, smaller in length than a dressage arena with 12 horses in it careening around at a hand gallop... Show Hacks are required to walk, trot and canter at three distinct lengths (normal, collected and extended) and to hand gallop in both directions [all at once]. They are severely penalized for a single mistake, so be top five in that class is an accomplishment and the class quite a spectacle.

We're glad to be home [and so are the horses] but it was an interesting and fun show. Classes were mixed in with demonstrations, exhibitions and clinics in various Spanish and Portugese riding arts. Join us next year! Show pictures may take some time to receive - probably about 8-10 weeks, but check back!

JHDT Horses have a Terrific Championship Show
September 2003

"We started out the season with a laid back attitude toward the show season - I needed some down time; but, as the season rolled along, the horses were doing so well, more and more clients were energized to qualify their horses for year-end awards, high points and the championships, with all 8 horses seeking qualification making it in style," said Jutta Heinsohn. "The competition at the championships was tough with over 130 horses entered and over 330 rides scheduled from Training level through Grand Prix. And, the judges were definitely not giving scores away - if you earned a 60+ score, you really earned it! Our horses, depending on their level, competed in a range of classes from Training level through 4th level over the 3-day show. At Training Level: Little Honor Bright, a 6 yr old Arabian owned by Peggy Flippo, with Jr/YR Megan McGuire on board, rode their personal best during their championship ride and came home with the Arabian high-point breed award. Peggy, it's your turn next year! Fandango D, a 12-year old Andalusian breeding stallion [in training for one year with Jutta] proved that you can teach and 'old' horse a 'new' discipline... this horse has surprised all by taking to the work so well - he's brought home many a "blue" this season and a Regional Championship for his breed. For his championship he placed fourth in a class of over 20! And then there is young RiverDance...an IDSH filly of 4 years, who has only shown in 4 shows this season and still managed to not only make her scores for USDF All-Breeds but came home with "Reserve Champion, Training Level" at the Championship under Jutta's exclusive training. This is particularly meaningful when you consider the horse and rider combination topping her was Charlotte Bredahl riding her Hanoverian gelding by Windfall and the field of competition was over 20 rides... RiverDance also took home the Show Champion award for the IDHS(NA) - SWR... UPDATED information: It was announced December 4, 2003, that she has won the IDHS[NA] Southwest Region Performance Champion Award [a cooler and cash prize] for her scores in dressage! At First Level: Hope [Danish Warmblood], owned by Elizabeth Rufenacht took top honors in the First Level Champiosnhip with Jutta Heinsohn riding - she looked smashing during that ride, and even though she broke once [Jutta was 'going for it'] she still bumped out the competition for top honors. Hope was also presented with the Danish High-point award and Lower-Level Freestyle Award at the show.At Second Level: Foxcroft's Chelsea [Cleveland Bay], owned by Carlita Mead took Reserve Champion Cleveland Bay at the show and put in solid performances in her classes at second level, placing First and Third in her warm-ups and 4th in her championship class [even when she ended up only having a 10-minute warm up for her class she did well...oops...]. Always a consistent and workmanlike performer, Chelsea, just a few short years ago, was competing as a hunter... she has at 16 enjoying a new career! At Third Level: Baccarat [dk bay Hanoverian], owned and ridden by Jean Morris, performed well in their 3rd level warm-up class but were unable to compete in the championship as Baccarat [Ben] was kicked in the warm-up by another horse and scratched from competition. Thankfully he is doing fine now and is back to light work. We may not have another chance to see Ben compete in California as he is moving to Florida with his owner... Look out Florida! We wish Jean and Ben all the best in their new location. Also competing at Third Level was Riitta and Jonathan Saada's lovely Andalusian Stallion, Montero V, ridden by Jutta Heinsohn. Montero performed beautifully in both his 4th level warm up class [Second] and hisTthird Level Championship class. While bumped out to fifth place in the championship calss with 11 horses competing, he really did put on a stellar performance. Why fifth? A 31 point difference between the judges scores... were they looking at 2 different horses??? Ah well, sometimes that's the breaks, but we were all delighted at his performance and there will be many more championship opportunities for Montero in the future. Montero is now competing at 4th level. If you are interested in following Montero, do check into his own website at: http://www.monterov.com.

At Fourth Level: Deanna Toste from Nipomo, CA clinics with Jutta as often as schedules allow and with her current horse - Jevereaux - took the 4th level Amateur Championship on Sunday. Congratulations Deanna.

Irish Draught Stallion "Wow's" Onlookers
September 2003

This weekend in Los Angeles, Registered Irish Draught, KEC Double Diamond, showed at Third Level Dressage in open competition and "wowed" onlookers and judge alike. KEC Double Diamond (Oisin for short) entered the ring on Saturday afternoon a little tense, having come straight from the breed-shed to the show, but still put in a solid performance at Third Level, culminating in a great score of 70.555% and first place. Trainer and owner, Jutta Heinsohn, was thrilled with his first third level class even though she rode him conservatively due to some deep and inconsistent footing. She kept repeating over and over, "I love this horse." Saturday's score should've been hard to top; however, on Sunday Oisin entered the ring with confidence and presence. He was engaged, round and soft in the bridle and put in a terrific performance. Even though he competed against established warmbloods in the class, he brought home the blue with a score of 73.411%! "Anyone who had any lingering doubt about the Irish Draught's ability to be competitive in open dressage should have no doubt now," said Heinsohn, "and anyone who has questioned why I have been low-key in my approach to my stallion's show schedule can see the results today!" FEI & USAE 'S' rated judge, Propfe-Credo was impressed enough to seek the owner out after the show to discuss her training program and encourage her to keep the low-key approach and provide variety to this young stallion for maximum results. "He can go all the way," said Propfe-Credo. "I expect him to be around for a long time." Following the show, the judge provided a clinic for interested competitors. During the clinic Oisin worked on his basic gaits, collection and extended work, lateral flexions and even piaffe ("...a natural and rhythmic exercise for this horse," noted Propfe-Credo, and "...of excellent quality.").

People who watched Oisin were heard to say, "you'd never believe of such a large-boned horse, that he can be so light and responsive." "You can see horse and rider are really a "team". Another spectator said, "I'll have to give this breed a closer look."KEC Double Diamond (Oisin) is a Registered Irish Draught stallion. He is owned by Adsagsona Farm and Jutta Heinsohn and resides in Somis, California. He was bred by Bill and Anna Kennedy of County Kerry, IRE. Oisin is by Glidawn Diamond out of Ballyard Katie and is grandson to King of Diamonds. Versatility is the creed of this breed. Andalusian Stallions Impressive
May-Sept 2003

Jutta Heinsohn, Bereiter FN, has no breed prejudice as a trainer. In fact, she looks for variety in her horses and enjoys campaigning all-breeds! She has had the fortune in 2003 to be showing two lovely Andalusian Stallions in dressage, both very different from one another in gaits, age, looks and levels and she is enjoying both as performance horses.
Montero V, owned by Riitta & Jonathan Saada of Casa Buena Suerte, stands between 16.2 and 16.3 hh. He is a 7 year-old bay stallion currently competing at 3rd level. Montero qualified in 2003 for USDF/ABIC; CDS and DASC Dressage Championships at 3rd level and has also been qualified for IALHA Regionals and Nationals plus UDSF All Breeds in 3rd Level. In September Montero V also became qualified for the IALHA Nationals in 4th Level as well. Not bad for a young man under saddle just 2 years! What a work ethic and talent!! 2004 will be Montero's first breeding season... visit Casa Buena Suerte to learn more.

Fandango D, owned by Shelly and John Fries of Vista del Lago Andalusians, stands approximately 16.1 hh. Fandango is a 12 year-old bay breeding stallion who began his dressage training at age 11. In less than one year, Fandango has not only gone from the breeding barn to the dressage arena, but he is already training at First level after a compressed year of showing at training level. Fandango qualified in 2003 for IALHA Regionals and Nationals at Training and First levels. Since he also shows an aptitude for hunt seat and dressage suitability rail classes, so you may see him in more than dressage at the Nationals this year! Click through to the Vista del Lago website to see babies and more!

Jutta Heinsohn is a german trained, Bereiter FN. She is schooled in many disciplines of which one is dressage. 2002 & prior

KEC Double Diamond Debuts In Dressage
August 2002

Adsagsona Stallion, KEC Double Diamond (Oisin for short), was debuted at the Sporthorse International Summer Dressage Show, August 3-4, 2002 at Second Level. Trainer, Jutta Heinsohn, introduced Oisin to open dressage competition over the show weekend and was truly delighted about his performance and reception. Oisin earned scores in the high 60's, with a score of 68.333% in his first test and an improved score of 68.684% in his second test.

"The show was full to overflowing, chaotic and distracting for a young breeding stallion, but he did his best, concentrated on his work and stayed with his rider the whole time... well, except for a throaty whinny on his way down from warmup to the show arena, and a little impromptu piaffe", remarked his groom. "I had a smile on my face the whole time", Jutta said. "I just love this horse!" "I'm very pleased... My goals were simple for this first show: keep him focused on his work, all four feet in the arena, and get him used to the competition scene. That he performed so well and held his own was just icing on the cake."

There were some mighty fine horses at the show, and several stallions. There was constant 'guessing' going on as to his breed, and not a soul (outside our own barn entourage) could figure it out without being told. The interesting thing was that once informed he was a Registered Irish Draught, many heads started nodding and saying - "ahh yes, a jumper then, or does he produce jumpers?". Things are changing and people are becoming more and more aware of the breed - or, they have at least heard about them, in large part I'm sure to more owners getting the horses out there and competing, the advocacy of breed owners, increased media coverage and the breed associations. KEC Double Diamond [Oisin] is line bred King of Diamonds, by Glidawn Diamond out of Ballyard Katie, a premium RID mare as his dam. Adsagsona is proud to stand Oisin. To learn more about breeding to this stallion, click here. [Back to News - click here.]

An Inferno he may be, but this day Dante proves himself
October 1999

Dante [HAN] - Owned by L. Monroe. Ridden here by D. Cordova. Photo by R.H. Froman (all rights reserved).

During his New Mexico debut with junior rider Daniel Cordova (16) on board, Dante was faced with a major thunder and hail storm as they prepared to go "up centerline" in the indoor arena in Albuquerque, New Mexico (Expo '99).

While his score in that first test was 58.158%, the combination rallied to perform their second test and earn 63.889% later that afternoon. Dante can be a challenging ride. When he gets it into his head that 'he can't hear you', the best you can hope for is that all four feet stay on the ground and that you can get his attention. Daniel did a marvellous job with him!

Show Management ceased competition for over an hour while the storm raged, said owner Laurie Monroe. "I was jumping out of my skin in there, so it's incredible that Dante, while rattled, kept his cool so well. I watched him totally give himself over to the rider after his initial reactions to the thunder cracking overhead."

Dante performed two more tests the next day, earning 58.378% and 63.488%.

Irish Earns 2nd Level Perormance Certificate
October 1999

O'Leary's Irish Diamond [RID] - Owned by J. Leary. Trained/Ridden to 2001 by J. Heinsohn. Photo by R.H. Froman (all rights reserved).

66.512% score in Second Level, Test 4, at Expo'99 gives 5-year old Irish Draught Horse stallion final score needed to earn the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Second Level Performance Certificate.

To be eligible for the award, 10 scores of 60% or higher must be earned, from four different judges, from four different competitions, including four scores earned in the highest test of the level. Just months ago, USDF awarded a First Level Performance Certifcate to the Irish Draught Horse Stallion.

O'Leary's Irish Diamond was the first recorded Irish Draught Horse to receive USDF performance certification. He is a half brother to KEC Double Diamond.

Photo at left: Irish and trainer/rider, Jutta Heinsohn. Jutta first rode Irish for his performance inspection [at age 3] in the United States and continued to ride, compete and train Irish through to 4th level and his return home to New Mexico in Spring of 2001.

Baccarat Settles in New Home
Recent German Import settles into new home
August 20, 1999

Baccarat [HAN] - Owned/Ridden by J. Morris. Trained by J. Heinsohn/J. Morris. Photo by L. Monroe (all right reserved).

Baccarat (4), by Brentano, arrived in the United States at the end of June and quickly settled into his new routine.

Owner, Jean Morris, is delighted with her new acquisition. "Ben is extremely willing and very sweet," said Jean. "I was looking for a horse with a good disposition and a little 'spark.' I got what I wanted and am looking forward to showing him soon."

We were fortunate enough during our trip to Germany to have located three exceptional individuals on our second day. We saved ourselves much driving and confusion of choice, by stopping the search right there and then.

With the help of Achim Vogt who located the horses, and my trainer, Jutta Heinsohn, who helped evaluate them (and translated many restaurant menus) we arrived at our choice. The decision was difficult considering the calliber of choices, but I know I made the right decision.
